Saving to a Flash Drive or Memory Card

Computer typing

Web pages as well as other documents such as word processing or resume files can be saved to a flash drive or memory card.

When you plug your flash drive or memory card into the front of the computer, a small balloon will pop up in the lower right corner alerting you of the drive letter that your drive/card has become.

Saving New Files to a FlashDrive/Memory Card

  1. Insert your flash drive or memory card into the reader on the front of the computer. Watch for the pop-up balloon in the lower right corner of the screen to see what the drive letter is. See where to plug it in. If there is no reader on the front, that computer you cannot use flash drives or memory cards on it.

  2. Click on File -- a drop-down menu will appear.

  3. Click on SAVE AS -- another drop-down menu will appear.

  4. Click in the "Save in" box to select the card reader (the drive that popped up in the balloon). If you missed the balloon, you can probably tell what drive the flash drive/memory card is by the name, or try G:, which is the first USB drive activated when you plug something into the card reader.

  5. At file name box, type a name for the file in the space provided.

  6. Click the SAVE button (at the bottom right) to save your work.

If you save a document in WordPerfect, the file will be readable in WordPerfect. It may or may not retain its formatting if read by another word processing program such as Microsoft Word.

If you save a resume using WinWay Resume, you MUST use WinWay Resume to read the file later.

What happens if the computer doesn't see my flash drive/memory card?

If you insert the flash drive after creating your file, the computer may not recognize your flash drive/memory card. To remedy this:

  1. Insert your flash drive/memory card if needed.
  2. Click Start in lower left of screen, and select My Computer.
  3. Your flash drive/memory card should be listed there. Select your drive from "My Computer" to save the file.
